A Survival Guide: Kokoda
A Survival Guide: Kokoda
A Survival Guide: Kokoda contains all the information needed by those people who are preparing to journey to Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda trail. A Survival Guide: Kokoda is approximately 64,000 words in length, which are divided in to 10 chapters. This includes a checklist at the end of the book containing all the equipment needed to take on the adventure. The checklist is designed to be torn out by the reader to use as a reference guide when packing their bags for the trek.
Colour photographs are included throughout the chapters to help illustrate the topics, and a special section is found at the very end of the book showing some extra images of life on the Track. All the images were taken by the author apart from a map of the Kokoda trail where appropriate acknowledgments are given.
A Survival Guide: Kokoda is written with a mix of humour and seriousness. The humour is based around the situations that the author and other trekkers get themselves in to, but with the seriousness for such topics as safety and health concerns. The book is easily read, and this can be done in a number of ways.
The book can be read either be from front to back, or can be used to pick and choose the topics which are of primary concern to the reader. This allows for easy reference when reviewing the book at a date closer to when the reader is preparing to leave for the adventure.
A Survival Guide: Kokoda is structured to give a logical view of the topics covered. After a short introduction, a layout of the Track is explained, touching on the story of the author and his adventures on each day of the trek. This section is included to allow the reader to get a true feel of how life is on the Track, the emotions felt and the sights to be expected.
Next is the necessary training to prepare for the Kokoda trail, followed by the equipment that should and should not be taken. Finally the difficult task of explaining the mental transformation and growth by accomplishing the Kokoda trail completes the journey.
The chapters in the book are arranged as follows:
Chapter 1: When going through hell, keep going
Chapter 2: The Kokoda trail
Chapter 3: Preparing for the Track
Chapter 4: 13 Essential items to bring with you
Chapter 5: 8 Items most people bring, that are not needed
